Learn About TRICARE Dental Plans

The Tricare Dental Plan is a completely voluntary dental insurance program that is one possible offering of coverage to those individuals who are active duty members of the United States Armed Forces. A Tricare Dental program insurance policy also covers the family members of those members of the active duty military. In addition, Tricare dental insurance is available to members of the United States National Guard as well as Reservists in addition to the family members of both the National Guard and the Reserves.

Tricare dental providers typically offer three variations of insurance coverage to those potential customers seeking some sort of coverage for their dental needs. Tricare dental enrollment is dependent upon those applying for coverage meeting the requirement criteria for eligibility. What is TRICARE Dental Insurance?

Tricare Dental is a program that furnishes dental insurance on a voluntary basis to those who meet the requirements for eligibility. A Tricare dental plan is typically reserved to members of the United States Armed Forces and their families and dependents while they are on active duty. These plans extend to members of the United States National Guard as well as to reservists and their respective families and dependents as well. Military dental insurance under a Tricare plan is available to servicemembers serving either inside the continental United States (CONUS) or those serving overseas (OCONUS).

Learn About the 3 Types of TRICARE Dental Coverage

Dental coverage through Tricare comes in three distinct coverage packages that cater to specific needs and/or life circumstances for the insureds and any of their dependents that may be included in those insurance policies. These Tricare dental programs include the Active Duty Dental Program, the Tricare Dental Program, and the Tricare Retiree Dental Program.

      • Those who are family members of people actively serving in the United States National Guard or the Reserves
      • Those serving in the U.S. National Guard or the Reserves who are not on active duty nor covered by TAMP

Find Out About TRICARE Dental Plan Requirements

Although Tricare dental offers three different types of plans for various sorts of circumstances, the array of those eligible to receive benefits through any of these plans is usually quite restricted. Those who are eligible for enrollment in any Tricare plan include any active, uniformed U.S. military servicemembers as well as their families. This also includes members of the U.S. National Guard or the Reserves as well as their families.

Tricare dental enrollment eligibility includes those who are survivors of members of the active military, National Guard, or the Reserves who have died while in service. Former spouses may also enjoy eligibility for these plans. Any recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor and their families may also enjoy eligibility to enroll in a Tricare plan. Finally, those registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) are also able to obtain coverage through a Tricare dental plan.

The types of beneficiaries are generally grouped into one of two categories:

  • Sponsors – Sponsors are the active duty, Reserve, National Guard, or retired members of these groups who have the root eligibility for coverage.
  • Family members – Family members are the children and spouses of the sponsors who are registered in DEERS.

Depending upon your beneficiary category, your particular benefits may vary as well as the plans in which you may be entitled to enroll. You can find out everything you need to know about Tricare dental coverage by downloading our free guide.

What services do TRICARE dental benefits include?

The type of Tricare dental insurance you ultimately select to cover you and your family depends greatly upon your status, whether that is as an active duty member of the Armed Forces, a member of the Reserves or National Guard, and whether or not you are retired among the various factors that may be taken into consideration. Whatever Tricare dental plan you select is also subject to whether you are stationed at home in the United States or overseas. These factors can all have a hand in determining what sorts of benefits you may derive from your plan.

Once you have met with Tricare dental eligibility requirements, and selected a plan with which you may enroll, you can look into the various benefits afforded to you by your new dental care insurance plan. The sorts of Tricare dental plan benefits enrollees may expect include an array of normal dental procedures and care that includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Exams, cleanings, fluorides, sealants, and x-rays
  • Fillings
  • Root canal procedures
  • Gum surgery
  • Other oral surgery including extractions
  • Crowns and/or dentures
  • Orthodontics
